First steps
Add your music, play it, and the handful of keys that are enough for a first evening.
Add your music
Tell amp where your music is. It indexes the folder — tags, lengths, covers — and never changes a file without asking.
amp library add ~/Music
Add as many folders as you like (amp library add /Volumes/Music --name NAS). They are scanned at
start, and again whenever you press R.
Start the player
amp
The first time, amp also starts the daemon, ampd, in the background: that is what plays.
The window you see is only one of its clients. Close it, and the music pauses with the daemon
keeping its place; open amp again, from this terminal or another, and you are where you left.
Three tabs
- player (W) — the cover, a visualizer and the queue at a glance.
- library — your music in a tree, with a details column on the right.
- queue (tab) — what plays next, and its totals.
The keys to know first
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| enter | play what is selected |
| space | pause, play |
| n p | next, previous |
| + - | volume |
| / | search everything |
| a | add to the queue |
| ? | every key, at any moment |
| :q | quit — the music pauses, the daemon waits |
| Z | quit and stop the daemon too |
Use the arrows to move, → to unfold an artist or an album, ← to fold it. The mouse works everywhere as well: click, double-click, right-click for a menu.
Tip. Double-click the player bar (or press c) for chill mode: just the music, nothing else on screen.
