Library tools
Tags, MusicBrainz, covers, conversion, tidy folders and a doctor — every change previewed, every change undone with u.
amp can also take care of the files themselves. Three promises hold for every tool below:
- You see a preview — before → after — and nothing happens until you confirm.
- Every change is journalled.
- u undoes it. If a step failed, u retries only what is left.
Tags
i edits the tags of the selection — one track or a thousand. Genres complete as you
type; +jazz adds a genre to every track, -jazz takes it away. In the editor,
ctrl+g looks for a cover and embeds it, never over an existing one.
MusicBrainz
L looks the album up on MusicBrainz and the Cover Art Archive, and proposes the tags
and the cover. If the tags are too poor to search, ctrl+f recognises the files by
their sound (fpcalc and an AcoustID key: see install); type
:identify for the same.
Put the key in config.toml:
[identify]
api_key = "your key"
Convert
:convert followed by a format, through your own ffmpeg: flac, alac, mp3-v0, mp3-320,
aac-256 or opus-160. amp refuses to convert lossy to lossless — it would only make bigger
files. :cancel stops it.
Tidy folders
:organize renames and moves files according to a pattern, safely even on disks that ignore
case:
[organize]
pattern = "{albumartist}/{album}/[{disc}-][{track:02} ]{title}"
The doctor
D examines the library and proposes fixes: duplicates, damaged files, albums whose tags disagree, mixed formats, spelling variants of one artist, missing tags and covers, and folders out of place.
Duplicates are never deleted: they are set aside in a hidden .amp-quarantine folder, from where
they can be restored.
From the shell, the doctor only diagnoses:
amp doctor # asks what to check, prints a report
amp doctor --check duplicates,covers
amp doctor --json > report.json # for scripts
amp doctor --quarantine # what was set aside, and where
amp doctor --empty-quarantine # delete it for good (asks first)
amp library restore /Volumes/Music # bring set-aside files back
